Sony Android smartphone, the XPERIA NXT Series Overview : Tech Buzz

Written By portalzey2 on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 | 5:38 AM

Sony announced its first Android smartphone, the XPERIA S, a few hours ago at CES and we got a chance to play around with it for a little while. The design, more or less, tip-toes that of the XPERIA lineup, though it is a bit thicker and there is no cheap, glossy plastic to be found anywhere. The unit we had had the markings of a prototype (Sony Ericsson branded, for one) and things might change in the final retail version. Sony has introduced a transparent bar below the display, which it says will be incorporated in future smartphones under its XPERIA NXT series. This transparent bar has the back, home and menu icons marked on it but these icons correspond to invisible capacitive touch buttons just above them – touching the transparent bar won’t do anything and one has to touch just a little above the bar. Sony has also let go of Sony Ericsson’s Android UI and has instead gone for a more simplistic, no-nonsense interface. The XPERIA S currently runs on Android 2.3.7 but the company says it will be updated to Android 4.0 ICS in Q2 of this year. Check out our hands-in gallery below and Sony’s press release after the break.
